Science has made great strides in fighting cancer. But, it's still a scary diagnosis that comes to one in four Americans. And, for a lot of us, it's hard to know what to say to a cancer patient.
Dr. Candy Arentz, a breast surgical oncologist with Texas Tech Physicians - Surgery, offers these tips on what to say, or not to say, to a friend who is facing cancer.
"Don't tell them all the bad stories you know, about chemotherapy, or people dying of the disease, just try to keep the positive, have the best outlook, it usually gets the best results, and good things to do, just keep them included, invite them out to holiday parties, invite them out to lunch, just keep your friendship with these people that are important to you," says Dr. Arentz.
Dr. Arentz adds, the best thing you can say when you're at a loss for words, is to admit that you don't know what to say, and instead, just listen.
