I once heard a veteran police officer say there is no such thing as a routine call.
And no one knows that better than Lubbock Police Officer Timothy Varner.
Officer Varner was on duty the evening of October 12th when the call came in from the Lubbock Salvation Army. He was responding to a report of a suspicious man walking around with a gun. Little did he know this would be the man who would try to kill him. Gunshots were exchanged and Officer Varner was wounded in the leg and shoulder. Fortunately, he survived his injuries and the gunman will face justice.
This story is a reminder to us all that there are men and women putting their lives on the line day in and day out.
Because every call is unpredictable, Officer Varner took the call that few officers will have to take. But they all know the risks involved.
So thank you for your service, Officer Varner. And the next time you see one of Lubbock's finest, thank them not just for what they do, but for the risk they assume every day to protect and serve.
