Amazon donates portion of online purchases to charities

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

This holiday season, Amazon is giving back to communities across the country.

Amazon launched a new site Wednesday called Amazon Smile. The number one online retailer will donate five percent of the total cost of items purchased on the site to charitable organizations of the customer's choice.

Customers can choose from over one million organizations across the country to donate to. In Amarillo alone, there are more than 500 organizations to choose from.

"I just can't imagine how this will impact the whole country. I just think it's wonderful," said Amarillo Area Foundation Vice President Charlotte Rhodes.

"I think it's a great opportunity for people to donate funds and not really have to do anything extra," added Alise Craig, program director of the Boys and Girls Club of Amarillo. "I think it's really going to benefit a lot of local agencies. Thank you to Amazon for thinking of this as a way to help people give back to their communities."

Amazon said there is no cap on how much it will donate. The company does not know when the Amazon Smile program will end.
