Region champ Pats eyeing state title run

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

While much of the history of Westover athletics begins and ends with the Patriots' success on the basketball court, it's the football team garnering much of the attention these days.

And the gridiron Pats don't plan on giving up the spotlight anytime soon.

Westover won its first ever region football title Friday with a victory over Worth County.

But head coach Octavia Jones says his team isn't done yet.

"When I got here we talked about winning championships and they totally bought into that," Jones says. "They had an opportunity to achieve the first goal, and now the sights are on having an opportunity to play for a state championship."

Westover can finish off an unbeaten region slate with a win over Albany Saturday, and the Patriots feel that shows they are among the elite in Class AAAA.

"Personally, I think we can play with the best of them," says senior LB Brenten Wimberly. "Any region, one, five, it doesn't matter. We can play with the best and that's what we're going to do. We're going to play and we're going to fight."

Wimberly has helped lead this team, on and off the field.

The senior was elected a team captain before the season, and has played like it on a dominant defense, leading the team with an absurd 35 tackles for loss and 17 sacks.

Wimberly knows what it would mean to this senior class to win a state championship.

"To have the first region championship and the first state championship in school history, it's just unbelievable," Wimberly thinks.

Jones says the region title brings the Westover program legitimacy in south Georgia. He believes the Patriots have officially arrived.

"We've steadily improved each year that we've been here, and we're proud of the guys for the accomplishments they have achieved this year," says Jones. "But we still have our sights on other goals. So right now, we want to try to close out the season with a victory and take that momentum into the playoffs."

Westover and Albany finish up the 2013 regular season Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Hugh Mills Stadium. Westover can clinch the city championship with a win.
