Food for Thought: 11.7

From a boastful BBQ to the flavors of Hawaii here in the Hub City - we have a buffet of perfection in this week's Food for Thought, but it's not all good news.

We begin at Nora's Mexican Food Restaurant at 4102 34th where Lubbock health inspectors found seven critical violations.

  • Several cold foods were not 41 degrees or below.
  • Uncovered drinks were in the kitchen.
  • An employee handled tortillas with their bare hands.
  • Raw chorizo was stored above cooked bacon.
  • Beans, barbacoa and menudo did not have an expiration date.
  • Wastewater from a prep sink was pooling in the kitchen and employee's restroom.
  • Kitchen containers and dishes were dirty or broken.

The report shows all violations were corrected.

Our other low performer this week is George's at 6914 82nd. They had nine critical violations.

  • Milk and raw chicken were above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.
  • Cooked sausage was not at least 135 degrees.
  • Cooked taco meat and chili were not re-heated to the correct temperature.
  • An employee washed their hands in a three-compartment sink instead of a hand sink.
  • Bad potatoes were with good ones.
  • An employee was not wearing gloves when handling ready to eat tomatoes.
  • Raw ground beef was on raw bacon.
  • A toxic item did not have a label.

The inspector notes, due to the number and the nature of the violations management did not demonstrate food safety knowledge.

Management tells us everything has been corrected.

The report shows all violations were corrected at the time of the inspection.
