It was welcome news earlier this year that there would be plenty of flu shots to go around. No one could predict that a big batch of the stuff might be contaminated.
That is exactly what happened to a British company that was supposed to stock the U.S. with about 47 million doses this season. The British government has suspended the license of that company, Chiron, to stop it from making any more vaccines until it meets sterility guidelines.
Lubbock County didn't order vaccines from Chiron, but that doesn't matter. Lubbock and cities everywhere are now forced to conserve the supply to make up for this unexpected shortage from Chiron.
The Lubbock Health Department tells us they've only received a portion of their order this year and now, the remaining order, about 2,200 vaccines, is on hold. The bottom line is the health department is only offering flu vaccines right now to high risk children and adults.
