Lufkin police: Man hits woman with shovel

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Lufkin man accused of hitting a woman in the head with a shovel is now in jail on an aggravated assault charge.

Joseph Eugene Copes, 39, is charged with second-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the police report, officers responded to the 1400 block of Briarwood Drive at 4:52 p.m. Sunday. The 32-year-old victim said that Copes choked her and hit her with a shovel. Officers arrested Copes after they saw the redness around the woman's neck and a bump on her head.

Copes was also booked in on seven municipal court warrants.

His bail has not yet been set.
