American Cancer Society to honor local and area volunteers

The American Cancer Society will recognize its many dedicated volunteers at its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Lunch on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center of Texas Tech University. The event is being generously underwritten by Blue Ribbon Sponsors.

Awards will be given to recognize outstanding commitments to the American Cancer Society. Among those receiving recognition at the luncheon will be the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center as Outstanding Community Partner, while the Adult Courage Award will go to Karron Smith of Dimmit, and the Child Courage Award will be awarded to Tori Kleinsteuber of Hobbs. Other honors will be awarded to Sherry Thomas as the Unsung Hero, and the Extra Mile Award will be given to the Monterey Church of Christ. The Dr. Gerald Woolam Sword of Hope Award will be awarded in Memory of Ray Fargason.

Recognition and thanks will also be given to countless other American Cancer Society volunteers and programs that support cancer research, advocacy and education in the Lubbock area.

The American Cancer Society is also excited to announce its 2014 major event dates.

The Relay For Life of Lubbock County will be chaired by held May 9, 2014 at Coronado High School. The Cattle Baron's Ball will be chaired by Bryan and Sheri Mudd on July 26, 2014 at the V-8 Ranch, generously donated by Abby & the Honorable Brian Quinn and Sam Arnett.
