Lubbock native Joshua Hathaway, 19, was shot and killed by a campus officer at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA on Monday night.
According to WWBT in Virginia, Hathaway got into a fight with a Liberty University Emergency Services officer in a women's residential hall on the university's campus.
Hathaway was pronounced dead at the scene and the officer was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment and was later released.
"The Liberty University community is deeply saddened by this tragic event and is prayerfully supporting all those impacted," said President Jerry Falwell, Jr. in a written statement.
Joshua Hathaway graduated as the salutatorian at Southcrest Christian School on May 23, 2013. His high school career included basketball, distinguished band member, many service projects and earning distinction as an excellent student with a GPA of 4.57. He was attending Liberty University with an intent to study business.
Liberty is a private, Christian university with more than 12,000 students on campus. It was founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell.
