Sophomore Wide Receiver and overall gifted athlete Jakeem Grant is KCBD NewsChannel 11's Player of the Week following a solid performance against Baylor Saturday.
Grant caught 6 passes for 72 yards and a Touchdown in Tech's 63-34 loss to the Bears.
Grant only stands 5 foot 6 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds soaking wet, but he makes up for his small stature with stellar quickness and agility. We've seen him make defenders look silly in the open field along with making one-handed grabs to keep drives alive.
Grant isn't all flash though. He has at least five catches in each of the last six games and has become a go-to receiver as well as a threat out of the backfield.
Grant talked about his performance at Baylor:
"I just basically use my speed to my advantage because I knew all they wanted to do was play man (coverage) on me so I knew if I used my speed and my quickness I knew that I could get open."
This may only be the beginning of the spectacular plays as Grant has two more years left as a Red Raider. He is approaching 1,000 yards for his career in two seasons and has already doubled his output from a year ago.
Grant says that teams were hoping that he is a senior:
"I always tell people its only going to get worse (for them). When I shake hands with opponents at the end of the game they always ask me if I am a Junior or Senior. I tell them, no I'm just a Sophomore, just keep your eyes open for the next two years."
The last thing Grant has to worry about is us turning away from what he is able to do on the football field. Even in the midst of a four-game skid, Grant is a consistent bright spot with his playmaking ability.
There is no doubt Tech will need him to shine as bright as ever if they want to win in Austin on Thanksgiving.
