Warning teens about the dangers of the 'Cotton Ball Diet'

Posted: Updated:

We hear a lot about the importance of a high fiber diet, but some people are taking this to a bizarre and dangerous extreme.

YouTube videos are adding interest to the so-called cotton ball diet. It is as ridiculous as it sounds, eating a cotton ball soaked in some sort of juice, rather than eating a real meal, to lose weight.

"Since cotton is non-digestible and has something of a sponge-type effect, it might be an initial feeling of fullness in the stomach. It possibly could cause some sort of obstructive effect lower in the intestines. I would consider that a fairly dangerous technique," says Dr. Fred Campbell.

Dr. Campbell also says cotton isn't even the same kind of fiber we talk about in high fiber foods. So, he says parents need to make sure kids understand that this so-called "diet" is a very dangerous idea.
