NCAA student athletes sign up for LCU

LUBBOCK, Texas (November 23, 2013) - Lubbock Christian University received several signatures from student-athletes during the early signing period for the NCAA. Head coaches Daren Hays (softball), Jennifer Lawrence (volleyball), Todd Duncan (men's basketball), Gary Belt (men's golf) and John Dansby (women's golf) inked several future Chaps.

Softball

Pamela Pence – (Lubbock, Texas / Cooper HS)

Pence earned 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All-City and 1st Team All-South Plains. The infielder/outfielder hit .410 with six doubles and seven triples along with 10 stolen bases.

Ashlynn Mayfield – (Dublin, Texas / Stephenville HS)

The outfielder was named 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Region, All-State Texas Girls Coaches Association 1st Team, All-Big Country Region 1st Team, All-State Texas Sports Writers Association 3rd Team, All-District 7-3A Co-MVP, Academic All-District and was a two-time 2013 Big Country Player of the Week.

Sydney Beuthien – (Era, Texas / Era HS)

Beuthien, a shortstop/catcher, played for Glory-Adkins while her high school did not sponsor softball. An all-around athlete, she was a standout in basketball and track and field.

Molly Davison – (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Carl Albert HS)

Davison comes to LCU from North Central Texas College. The infielder hit .319 for the Lions with six homeruns and 38 RBIs last season.

Haley Hardison – (Brock, Texas / Brock HS)

The infielder was named Texas Sports Writers All-State Honorable Mention and District MVP while hitting .455 with 13 doubles, six triples, five homeruns and stole six bases.

Liz Torres – (Palmdale, Calif. / Howard College)

Torres ranked second in NJCAA DI in RBIs with 96 and tied for fifth in homeruns with 23 while hitting .500 overall with 11 doubles. The NFCA National Catcher of the Year, Torres was also named an NFCA 1st Team All-American, NFCA 1st Team All-Region, NJCAA 2nd Team and to the WJCAC All-Conference Team.

Audra Pettit – (Peoria, AZ / Northwest Christian School)

Pettit was a 1st team All-Section, 2nd team All-Division and a 2nd team All-State Arizona Republic honoree. The outfielder hit .443 with 17 doubles, five triples and three home runs.

Abbey Poe – (Kerrville, Texas / Tivy HS) infield

The infielder hit .397 with three doubles, two triples and 24 runs scored. Poe also stole a dozen bases with a .923 stolen base percentage.

Jacie Thomason – (Mills, Texas / Caddo Mills HS)

Thomason, an infielder, was named to the District 12-2A 1st Team.

Volleyball

Kelsie French - (Wolfforth, Texas / Frenship HS)

The libero/defensive specialist was a three-year letter winner in the Frenship volleyball program and led the Tigers to the District 4-4A Championship and Class 4A Region I Quarterfinal in 2013. She was recently named the District 4-4A Outstanding Defensive Player in 2013. French was also recognized as the 2013 Most Valuable Player at Canyon Randall Tournament and All-Tournament at the Frenship Tournament and earned 1st Team All-District in 2012.

Sam Matthews – (Artesia, N.M. / Artesia HS)

Matthews is a two-time All-District 1st Team and Jane Leopold All-Tournament Team honoree. The middle blocker was also named 2nd Team All-State and to the All-South Team.

Suzanne Shankle – (Dallas, Texas / The Covenant School of Dallas)

Shankle is a three-time 1st Team All-District recipient and the outside hitter has earned All-State recognition the past three years.

Men's Basketball

Scout Teal – (New Deal, Texas / Abernathy HS)

Teal, a center, was named 1st Team All-State and 1st Team Avalanche-Journal All-South Plains while averaging 17.8 point per game and shooting 62 percent from the field.

Men's Golf

Josh Montoya – (Wolfforth, Texas / Frenship HS)

Montoya was the 2013 District 4-4A champion and will be playing in the USGA Open Championship qualifier in May.

Women's Golf

Lindsey Williams – (Lubbock, Texas / Frenship HS)

Williams has 17 top-five finishes in her Frenship career and was a member of the 2013 team that qualified for the Class 4A State Tournament, a team that was also the District 4-4A Champions. Williams is also a two-time Academic All-District selection.

Lindsay Ferguson – (San Marcos, Texas / San Marcos HS)
