TxDOT warns of dangerous highway conditions

Provided by: Texas Department of Transportation

AUSTIN – As the Texas Department of Transportation continues to monitor and address freezing precipitation and snow on statewide roadways, the agency is asking drivers to stay off all roads in impacted areas. While drivers may think roadways are fine, black ice covered by snow is a hazard and can cause deadly crashes.

In the Panhandle and across northern and west Texas, TxDOT snowplows and de-icing trucks continue to deploy as necessary, and crews will work around the clock to clear roads and assist where needed.

The following is a list of closures/hazards throughout impacted parts of the state as of 1 p.m. CST. In every area where hazardous conditions exist, TxDOT crews are out clearing roadways as much as possible:

· Amarillo – No road closures, but travel is hazardous due to snow and ice; travel is not advised

· Abilene – No road closures, but travel is hazardous due to snow and ice; travel is not advised

· Austin – No road closures; light ice on bridges in Hill Country counties; exercise extreme caution if traveling

· Atlanta – No severe weather yet; snow and ice conditions are expected later today; crews on standby and pretreating

· Childress – No road closures; moderate to heavy snowfall; travel is not advised

· Dallas – No severe weather yet; snow and ice conditions are expected later today; crews on standby and pretreating

· El Paso – The following closures: Transmountain (Loop 375), (From US 54 to I-10); US 62/180 (from the El Paso county line to the New Mexico state); travel is hazardous due to snow and ice; travel is not advised

· Ft. Worth – No severe weather yet; snow and ice conditions are expected later today; crews on standby and pretreating

· Lubbock – No road closures, but travel is hazardous due to snow and ice; travel is not advised

· Odessa – The following closures: Loop 250 in Midland is closed; SH 191 closed from

Loop 250 to FM 1788; travel is hazardous due to snow and ice; travel is not advised

· San Angelo – No road closures, but travel is hazardous in the area, particularly Glasscock County, due to ice on the roads; travel is not advised

· Waco – No severe weather yet; snow and ice conditions are expected later today; crews on standby and pretreating

· Wichita Falls – No closures; thin layer of ice on bridges; travel is hazardous due to ice; travel is not advised

Sleet or freezing rain can make driving extremely hazardous. TxDOT advises motorists to avoid driving and stay at home. If motorists must get on the roads, please use extreme caution and remember these safe driving tips:

· Reduce speed. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions

· Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice

· Watch carefully for snow removal equipment and stay at least 200 feet back if you are behind a snow plow

· Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first

· If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you feel you have regained traction then straighten your vehicle
