Lubbock shoppers go local for Small Business Saturday

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

You already heard about the big retailers on Black Friday, but on Saturday, small business gets the spotlight.

"Small Business Saturday" is a day for consumers to support local small businesses that contribute to the local economy.

Bybee's is a small business located near Indiana Ave and South Loop 289, and like many other small business around town, today was full of special sales and doorbusters.

"Today for shop small, we have until 2 p.m., 50 percent off the entire store," said Store Manager Evett Hernandez.

"We do have our sale racks that are going up to 80 percent off, which means items as low as $5 to $10 each," Hernandez said.

A survey by NFIB and American Express estimates that consumers spent $5.5 billion at small, independently-owned businesses on Small Business Saturday last year.

"I would much rather shop in a boutique setting than go to the craziness of the mall," said Mayrah Bigham.

The National Retail Federation is projecting that $602.1 billion will be spent on holiday shopping this year, a 3.9 percent increase from last year.

"You think Friday is it, then maybe Cyber Monday, but I didn't know about Saturday.  Just another day for shopping haha," Jessica Wilkinson said.

The group estimated that 140 million will shop during the four-day Thanksgiving weekend.
