Pioneers bounce back with convincing win

A dozen players scored, including Plamen Hristov with 16 points and Barry Johnson with 14, as the Wayland Baptist Pioneers rolled to a 100-44 win over Ecclesia College (Ark.) on Saturday afternoon in Hutcherson Center, 100-44.

Wayland (5-1) led 45-21 at halftime over the Royals (3-8) as the Pioneers bounced back from their first loss of the season, an 84-82 setback on Monday on the road against West Texas A&M.

On Saturday, the Pioneers shot 57 percent (36-of-63) from the field, including 64 percent (14-of-22) from three-point range. Wayland made 14-of-19 free throws (74 percent).

Ecclesia shot 34 percent (18-of-53) and 29 percent (4-of-14) from long range. Wayland outscored the Royals 14-4 at the free-throw line as the Pioneers committed just nine fouls.

WBU committed 12 turnovers compared to 28 for the Royals, and the Pioneers held a 37-27 rebounding edge.

Travis Payton had nine assists for Wayland, which next heads to Siloam Springs, Ark., to open Sooner Athletic Conference play against John Brown University at 8 p.m. Thursday.
