DPS investigates major crash east of Idalou on US 62/82

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was notified of a major crash Wednesday on US 62/82 east of Idalou.

At 6:23 p.m., troopers responded to a two vehicle crash which resulted in two drivers being seriously injured. Unit 1 was a red 2005 Pontiac 4-door and was driven by Richard Von Speigel, 31, of Lubbock. Unit 2 was a white 2012 Ford pickup driven by Ramiro Rodriguez III, 31, of Abilene.

Unit 1 was heading east on US 62/82 when Speigel lost control and went into the center median. Unit 1 began to roll as it travelled into the westbound traffic lane. Unit 2 was heading west on US 62/82 and crashed into unit 1. The westbound lanes were blocked temporarily by the crash.

Speigel was airlifted to UMC in critical condition. Rodriguez was transported by ambulance to Covenant with serious injuries.

Crash is still under investigation.

Von Speigel is in critical condition at UMC.

Rodriguez is fair condition at Covenant.
