(WMC-TV) - Officials in Dyersburg and Dyer County are preparing for what they are concerned could end up being a "major historic event".

The storms moving into the area could bring with it ice and sleet, causing power outages throughout the county.

Dyersburg's 911 office is ready for a busy day, and city leaders say they have been preparing for the storm since Monday.

Residents say they are as ready as they are going to get for the winter storm.

For Billy Cannon, it is all about watching the weather and waiting for his wife to get off of work.

Hundreds lined up inside and outside Casey's General Store in Dyersburg, filling their gas tanks and their stomachs.

"More or less worried than excited. Don't want to lose power ... Gotta stay warm, keep the kids warm," added Dyersburg resident Joey Reynolds.

"I've been without power before. I'll be OK for a couple of days. I don't have to go to Walmart because I already had enough food," said Dyersburg resident John Henderson.

Many are already staying off the roads and inside as temperatures continue to drop.

Students are happy about their long weekend.

"Heat and cooking … I'm not too worried about because we have gas. But when the electric goes off, I can't see what I'm doing," said Billy Cannon.

Officials in Dyersburg say road conditions are likely to worsen sometime Friday.

Action News 5's Justin Hanson has been in Dyersburg since Thursday afternoon. He is keeping tabs on the weather conditions and road situation. Stay with WMCTV.COM for the very latest developments.
