Nashville Christmas Parade, tree lighting ceremony canceled

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Officials have announced that the Nashville Christmas Parade has been canceled for Friday because of the threat of incoming winter weather.

Piedmont Natural Gas sent the following statement: "The safety and security of parade participants and the tens of thousands of people who enjoy the Parade annually (especially our children) are our top priority in making this decision. We hate to cancel the Parade but we do not want to place anyone in possible winter weather conditions or situations that could be dangerous for them and others."

Officials say the parade will not be rescheduled for 2013 because it would be "impractical" because of the logistics involved in planning a parade of this size.

Nashville's annual tree lighting ceremony, which is traditionally held right before the Christmas parade, was also canceled for Friday night. Mayor Karl Dean will be turning on the lights to the city Christmas tree at 4:30 p.m. Friday, but there will be no program.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for most of the area, including Davidson County. The advisory in Davidson County is in effect from 4 p.m. to midnight Friday.

According to the NWS, a winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties, so drivers should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities.
