New Mexico voters have had the opportunity to hear from both presidential candidates on the ballot and their running mates this election year. The state accounts for only five electoral votes which begs the question "Why New Mexico?"

10 states (New Mexico, Oregon, Nevada, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Maine, Ohio, and Florida) are considered battleground states in the 2004 election. That's because neither candidate in the 2000 election won the popular vote by more than 50 %, so voters in these states are called "swing voters".

As for New Mexico's voting history. In the past three presidential elections, Democrats won the state of New Mexico. But in the five elections prior to that, New Mexico voted Republican.
