LEVELLAND – Jasmine Brainard made 11-of-19 shots from the field on her way to a game high 23 points and TaSheena Moore added 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Lady Texans were dominant in their 74-48 conference-opening win over Western Texas College Saturday at the Texan Dome.
Behind Brainard, the Lady Texans (4-6, 1-0 WJCAC) wasted little time building an early lead.
Leading 8-7 in the opening minutes, Brainard scored back-to-back buckets that began a 15-0 scoring run. Brainard was 4-of-4 with eight points during that spurt.
South Plains led by as many as 21 before the two teams went to the locker room with the Lady Texans leading 36-17.
The Lady Texans were equally dominant for most of the second half. A 3 by Alexius Dawn with 6:38 to go in the game gave South Plains a 33-point lead, 66-33. Shortly after that shot, Lady Texan head coach Michelle Wyatt emptied her bench, giving her reserves much needed playing time as SPC enters winter break.
South Plains will have three weeks away from game competition before traveling to the Phoenix area where they will visit Chandler-Gilbert on Dec. 28 before playing in Scottsdale College's Bill Culver Classic Dec. 29-31.
The Lady Texans will resume conference play when they host Howard College Monday, Jan. 6 at the Texan Dome.
