FORT SMITH, AR (WAFF) -

The man wanted in connection to a weekend murder in Madison County shot himself after a car chase in western Arkansas.

Police said an Arkansas State Trooper stopped a car matching the description of Carter's vehicle before 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. A woman driving the car got out and fled on foot, and a man hiding in the car got behind the wheel and drove away.

A trooper near Fort Smith then spotted the car and began a short pursuit. The car suddenly stopped, and when the trooper approached the car, he found the driver dead.

Crawford County AR Coroner Pam Wells confirmed Sunday night that Scott Carter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Carter was wanted in the murder investigation of Amy Murphy, who was found shot to death at a home on Jordan Road in Madison County Saturday morning.

The woman driving Carter's vehicle was arrested in Franklin County, AR. Authorities are not releasing her name.
