Rumor confirmed: Baker Mayfield leaving Texas Tech

Baker Mayfield Baker Mayfield
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The rumors regarding Baker Mayfield leaving the Texas Tech football program have been confirmed.

I spoke with Mike Berman of YNN in Austin, Texas who talked to Mayfield over the phone earlier today and says that he is leaving the program due to lack of communication between him and the coaching staff.

He went on to say upon finishing his finals, Mayfield immediately headed back home to Austin. This coming just before Mayfield was named All-Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. He started the most games of any Quarterback for Texas Tech in 2013 (7) and tallied 218 completions for 2,315 yards and 12 Touchdowns.

With 19 days until the Red Raiders Holiday Bowl meeting with #14 Arizona State, Mayfield, Michael Brewer and Davis Webb were all competing for the start at QB. Despite his walk on status, Tech has the ability to block him from transferring to certain schools. He would be able to transfer to a lower level program without a block or having to sit out a year.

Due to Tech's policy of Freshman not being able to talk to the Media and Michael Brewer's lack of playing time, we haven't had a chance to hear from any of the Red Raider Quarterbacks during the season. With Mayfield having the most experience at starting quarterback of any of the 3, the move will undoubtedly shake up the program's off season.

Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury and other officials at Texas Tech have yet to comment.
