Mother and son graduate together in McNeese State University's fall commencement

CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

As the band was gearing up and friends and family took their seats, Tracy LeMieux was getting ready to walk across the stage as a 2013 McNeese graduate, but little did she know she would be graduating alongside her son, Masson.

"When he graduated high school," said LeMieux. "I jokingly said, "Oh, I'm going to go to college with you." I didn't think that was going to happen."

But Tracy did go back. She enrolled at McNeese and majored in visual arts at the same time her son Masson was majoring in performing arts.

"It's kind of funny because I don't really think either of us really thought we'd end up here but, we did," said LeMieux. "Then, we both wound up in the same building because we were both in fine arts so I would see him sometimes and wave."

Tracy wasn't the only parent there for their son. A local father of a student who wasn't able to attend the ceremony accepted his son's diploma on his behalf and wore a picture of his son as he walked across the stage. For Tracy and her son, they say they couldn't be more proud of each other.

"To see him finish this chapter in his life and start another one," said LeMieux. "It's really exciting. I don't know, it's hard to put into words."

Tracy's son Masson LeMieux says he's happy to his mom graduate right along with him.

"I'm glad she got to do this," said LeMieux. "I'm glad she got this opportunity and she's worked really hard and she's been happy that she's got to come to school with me. That's a really unique opportunity that she's got to come to school with me. That's something not everybody gets to do."

Along with celebrating her graduation, Tracy was also celebrating her birthday.

Over 700 students graduated from McNeese State University on Saturday, receiving more than 500 bachelors degrees, 140 masters degrees and nearly 100 associates degrees.

Blake McCaskill, president of the McNeese Alumni Association, addressed the students on behalf of the association, while President Dr. Phillip Williams welcomed the students. Degrees were conferred by Dr. Jeanne Daboval, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs at McNeese.
