The Children's Place sponsors make Christmas special for families in need

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

More than 700 children will get a surprise this Christmas thanks to volunteers who donated gifts to families in need.

The Children's Place matched sponsors with families who would otherwise go without during the holidays.

"It is frantic, as you could probably see. We need to make sure that we are checking them in to make sure the right gifts get to the right families," said Roxane Hill, the vice president of development at The Children's Place.

Thirty volunteers sorted donated gifts for 236 families. The gifts will go to the 746 children and their parents.

"Most of them are here receiving services at The Children's Place," Hill said.

"It is a really good feeling. It is a great time of year and it really brings the spirit of Christmas back," said Michelle Howard who donated some gifts.

For 10 years, Howard and her co-workers at Grey Healthcare Group have adopted families for Christmas.

"They give a list and it is awesome to be able to get the one thing they ask for for Christmas," she said.

"It is a very emotional time for them as they come and collect the gifts. We are very fortunate the sponsors that we have are very, very generous," Hill said.

Jennifer Snyder and her co-workers also adopted families this year.

"In the end we helped 72 people," Snyder said.

One family she saw in need really hit close to home as Snyder said she raised her two sons as a single mother.

"My kids had a part to do with it too. It just felt heavy on my heart that I needed to something. When I saw it was a single mom with two boys, I knew I had to do more," she said.

Snyder and many other sponsors donated more than the requested gifts – they often included clothing and toiletry items.

"About three cart full from Target. All for kids ages 7, 5, 2 and 1 and their mom," Howard said.

"It is amazing. I think about how many more kids and families that are out there that need help. Hopefully next year we can do more," Snyder said.

The Children's Place is a non-profit agency that helps heal the youngest survivors of abuse, neglect and trauma. Last year they helped 191 families and this year they were able to help more than 200 families.
