Sonny Cumbie heading to TCU

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

After days of speculation, former Texas Tech Red Raiders Quarterback and Co-Offensive Coordinator and Inside Receivers Coach, Sonny Cumbie, confirmed that he is heading to TCU to be their Co-Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach.

"They contacted me. I didn't seek it out. It was a difficult decision but a great opportunity and a step up in the coaching profession," said Cumbie.

Cumbie was the longest tenured coach on the Texas Tech staff, having started under Mike Leach in 2009.

Cumbie will not help guide the Red Raiders to the Holiday Bowl, where he was the MVP in 2004 throwing for 520 yards in a win over California.

"Since I'm moving in conference, best to close the chapter and move on. I remember my time at the Holiday Bowl and hope they have another great moment out there this year," Cumbie said.

Cumbie stressed there is no fallout and he left on great terms.

"Kliff has been a dear friend for 13 years. He gave me advice on this. It just happens that it's in conference. I hate to leave, but I'm excited for the new challenge," Cumbie explained.

The move comes days after Quarterback Baker Mayfield left the team and announced his transferring. Mayfield isn't following Cumbie to TCU. In fact, true freshman's transfer was a complete shock to Cumbie.

"The whole staff was floored by it. We didn't see it coming at all. I was really surprised it happened," said Cumbie.

Cumbie, who is from Snyder, loves West Texas and Texas Tech but saw this move as a step up in the coaching profession.
