Number of Texas teachers declined over past four years

Posted: Updated:

The number of new teachers in Texas has dropped during the past four years, and education leaders say there are several reasons for the decline.

Texas schools hired fewer than 15,000 first-year teachers last year. That's down from 25,000 in 2008.

The recession and major cuts to education funding contributed to a hiring slowdown. Analysts say that led some teachers to put off retirement and caused districts to hire fewer teachers.

When they did hire, districts targeted more experienced teachers.

The good news is that education colleges say they're now starting to hear from districts looking to hire first year teachers.
