(WMC-TV) - A young girl was attacked in her neighborhood Friday morning and now residents are voicing concerns over safety in the area.
Neighbors say they're relieved the girl is safe, but are not surprised by Friday morning's attack.
Memphis police are searching for a suspect and an entire neighborhood is on alert after a young girl was attacked and managed to escape being kidnapped.
Police surrounded the corner of Robin Hood and Sharpe early Friday morning.
"I just wondered, ok something must have happened and unfortunately it wasn't good news," said Candice Fondren with Girls Inc.
Neighbors came to the aid of a 13-year-old girl who told police she was walking along Robin Hood Lane at 7:30 Friday morning when a man attacked her and tried to kidnap her but she managed to escape.
Kate Ryan who lives in the neighborhood said, "That's shocking, I'm glad that she wasn't hurt."
The victim who attended nearby Sherwood Middle School may have been on her way to school.
"It has you worried, you know if you have a child you're going to worry about that," said Melanie White, who is a parent herself.
As police search for the suspect, parents are on edge.
White said, "I wasn't shocked at all…Because it has happened in this area before with the kids walking to and from school."
This is why the Girl's Inc. office, which is just steps from the where the teen was attacked....offers a safe place for young girls.
Fondren said, "We know it's unsafe and though middle and high school girls walk home, I don't agree with it because there are still pedophiles and predators out here."
Police offered no description on a suspect.
