Bounced check kicks Angelina JP out of primary race

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

The incumbent justice of the peace of Precinct 3 in Angelina County is apparently not eligible for the Republican primary race after a check for his application fee was returned.

Judge Bradley Stringer takes full blame for the oversight. He said he wrote a $375 check to the Republican Party on Nov. 22, but it was returned on Dec. 5. Republican Party Chairman Robert Flournoy did not learn of the returned check until Dec. 10, a day after the filing deadline.

"I understand this is something I should've caught. So, actually on the 22 when I paid it, it actually cleared through my account on the 5th of December so it was one of those things I just didn't catch and I should have, but I didn't," Stringer said.

A former clerk for Stringer, Pat Grubbs, is the lone candidate as of now on the Republican ballot.

"I can't lie about what happened," Stringer said. "I feel horrible about it but I'm not throwing in the towel yet. I'm looking into other avenues in the election code, but if it turns out I can't be in the primary, I'll do everything to get the write-in votes in November."

Stringer fired Grubbs earlier this year after he said he learned she had been falsifying information on paperwork. Stringer said she had been falsely entering his name into the database on pending court cases.
