Junior Achievement Run for Success moved back to Sunday

Posted: Updated:
LUFKIN, TX (News Release) -

Due to the threat of severe weather that is forecasted for Saturday, December 21st, Junior Achievement of Angelina County (JA) is postponing its 5K, 10K and Half Marathon Race for Success, to Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Slack Elementary. The race will still take place, and same-day registrations will still be available. The race will start and end at Slack Elementary, located at 1305 Fuller Springs Drive. Same-day registrations will end promptly at 7:30am. The races will begin with the half marathon starting at 8am; the 10k starting at 8:10am; and the 5K starting at 8:20am.

"It was a heart-wrenching decision to make, as we are so excited for this event. But in the end, the safety of our runners is the top priority" says Executive Director Michelle Green.  We've monitored the weather closely, and although we hate to postpone the race, we have decided that it is in the best interest for all runners for us to postpone. We are still very excited to bring this new fundraiser – especially a half marathon to Lufkin. We've had tremendous support, both locally, and from outside the area for this race, and we hope that spectators and runners will join us on Sunday. Due to rescheduling this event, we are now in great need of additional volunteers.  Please email the JA office at JuniorAchievement@consolidated.net if you can volunteer.

After speaking with many advisors and athletes, we chose to hold the race on Sunday, Dec. 22nd. "When you have trained for months, it's better to postpone only one day verses a couple of weeks" say Melinda Sullivan, Race Chair and Lufkin Area Pacesetters member. Plus, many people have arrived in Lufkin from out of town to run this Race, and we want them to be able to participate."

Junior Achievement is a youth development non-profit organization, dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, to plan for their future, and to make smart academic and economic choices. For more race information, or to become a volunteer, please contact Michelle Green at 936.632.090 or at Michelle@jaangelinacounty.org.
