South Plains Food Bank gives holiday boxes to needy

Volunteers joined the South Plains Food Bank on Friday to distribute holiday food boxes to those in need.

The boxes include a ham or turkey, fresh produce and other items. The contents should last recipients for about 12 days.

Food bank CEO David Weaver said the distribution is a special time, not only for those receiving a box, but also for those handing them out.

"I tell people, you feel like the most god blessed person out here," Weaver said, "because a lot of the cars, they'll say god bless you. They don't know exactly where the food comes from - they just know people care about them and want to make a difference in their lives."

The food bank will be distributing the boxes through 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
