Law enforcement warns of spike in burglaries after Christmas

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The presents you tore open Christmas morning are now nestled safely inside your home, but authorities are advising you to make sure the boxes they came in aren't putting you in danger.

Law enforcement says there can be a spike in burglaries after Christmas.

Alleys and dumpsters are a goldmine for thieves because they tell them exactly what new Christmas presents are inside your home, possibly making you a target for robbers.

So here are some tips to help minimize the risk:

  • Break down boxes and place them in dark colored trash bags.
  • Drop cardboard boxes at recycling drop off centers around Lubbock
  • Record serial numbers of valuables.
  • Store paper copies of those serial numbers inside your home
  • Call 911 if you see suspicious behavior
