FDA Warns Against Antidepressants on Children

The FDA has issued a so-called black box warning about the use of antidepressants on children. That means in patient handouts and starting soon on TV, adds for drugs including Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft will make it clear there is a risk.

"The use of these products causes a statistically significant increase in suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents," says Lester Crawford, Acting Director of the FDA.

The FDA says it still believes the drugs can be helpful, but that parents should expect lengthy discussions with doctors who prescribe the drugs to their children.
