Gamecocks finish 4th in polls

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The University of South Carolina Gamecocks have finished at No. 4 in both major postseason football polls, the highest postseason rank in South Carolina history.

Both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls place the Gamecocks behind BCS National Champion Florida State, Auburn and Rose Bowl Champion Michigan State.

"Being ranked No. 4 in both major polls is an honor for the University of South Carolina and for our football program," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "Thanks to the players for achieving another 11-2 record. Thanks also to the coaches, the support staff and our fans for their contributions. Also thanks to the voters for thinking so highly of us. We are very appreciative and thankful for being the highest–ranked team in school history and hope to do better next year."

This is the ninth time that Carolina has finished the season ranked in the final Associated Press poll and the third-straight top-10 finish. Here are Carolina's postseason AP rankings: 1958 (13), 1984 (11), 1987 (15); 2000 (19); 2001 (13); 2010 (22); 2011 (9); 2012 (8); 2013 (4).

Missouri and Oklahoma came in at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

Orange Bowl Champion Clemson is ranked No. 7 in the coaches poll and No. 8 in the AP Poll.
