Lubbock-Cooper maintains focus on school safety

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Rick Saldana, Chief of Police for the Lubbock Cooper school district, has served the district for 21 years and in that time, he says he has watched their emergency response program soar.

"We've progressed our department from two and a half officers to ten," Saldana said. "And we are the only school district in the area that has one officer on each campus."

There are seven total campuses in the Lubbock-Cooper district and 10 officers dedicated to the protection of students and faculty.

Officer Corey Williams is assigned to Laura Bush Middle School, but his responsibilities don't end there.

He is the designated officer for Active Shooter Training.

The school sends Williams to statewide training sessions once a month to equip him with the most updated, most innovative and most intensive training available. Then he passes that training on to district officers.

"This is how we ensure that our officers are ready and willing and better prepared to take on an active shooter." Saldana said.

Williams would argue that he knows the Laura Bush Middle School better than anyone else, but to him, the school is more than just a building.

Williams is dedicated protecting these students, and the students are an active part of the school's safety efforts.

Two times a week, a group of around 30 kids will meet with Officer Williams to talk about school safety.

"It's great to have kids inside the classroom that know what's going on and can help us in that way," Williams said.
