(WMC-TV) – A 15-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the head on his way to school Friday morning, according to police.
The shooting happened around 6:45 a.m. on the 2500 block of Jenwood Street, which is near Covington Pike and Raleigh Lagrange Road.
"The young man was out here yelling and hollering and crying and oh, that's a lot to deal with at 7, 6 in the morning," said Valerie Miller, who lives in the area. "He was hurt, he was very hurt."
Police say the teenager was sitting in a car parked in a driveway, handling the gun when it went off and hit him in the head.
He was taken to the hospital and is said to be in non-critical condition. No one else was hurt during the incident and police say the gun has been recovered.
Memphis police investigators are warning parents to be aware of what their kids take to school with them.
Major Mike Shearin said, "Parents need to be vigilant, get involved in their kid's life. Make sure what they are carrying in their backpacks, especially on their way to school."
"This is a quiet neighborhood. We don't have any problems like this. It hurts because children shouldn't be around guns first of all," Miller added.
There are no suspects in this case, since police believe teen accidentally shot himself. Investigators are trying to determine who owned the gun and why the teen had it.
