Thousands come out to honor and remember Meg Menzies

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) -

Many fought back tears as they listen to fond memories of Meg Cross Menzies, a woman who loved God, her family, and running.

Keishanna James went to high school with Meg. They both were on the track team. Looking back on those memories, Keishanna James says Meg's kind spirit will never be forgotten.

"Whenever you would hear Meg's name or see her, she always had a smile on her face. She would go above and beyond for any of her friends," James said.

At Friday's service, ministers talked about the 70,000 plus people expected to run Saturday in Meg's honor. James says that number, alongside the thousands who came out Friday, shows the impact she had on so many lives.

"I think they honored her the right way they should, especially with all of the support they are getting with the race tomorrow, with people who are participating all across the country to honor her legacy," James said.

Her family did not address the crowd Friday but wrote letters. Her husband, Ashland Police Sergeant Scott Menzies wrote, "Every time I lace up my running shoes, I'll think of you."

Middle and high school friend Marlene Lang was in show choir with Meg. She says no one will be able to replace her friend.

"Her smile was the most beautiful thing, and she will forever be remembered and in our hearts, and we miss her so much," Lang said.

A run is planned at River's Edge Elementary School this Saturday morning at 9:00.
