The Midland Independent School District says the personal information of current and former students could be at risk.
The school district is telling parents and guardians that a computer theft could allow the social security numbers and birth dates of students to be used fraudulently.
Administrators are encouraging students and families to place a fraud alert on credit lines and to contact at least one of the three major credit bureaus.
The district has not released how the computer theft happened, only saying a computer and external hardrive were stolen late last month.
The superintendent says the district is now reviewing safety measures to see if changes need to be made.
