Clowney: 'I should' be No. 1 pick in NFL Draft

Jadeveon Clowney thinks he has what it takes to be the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the former South Carolina defensive end said Thursday morning on The Dan Patrick Show.

The Rock Hill native was interviewed on the morning sports radio program and was asked if he should be picked by the Houston Texans, the owner of the first pick.

"Yes, sir," Clowney said to fill-in host Chris Mannix. "I should."

Clowney has been working out to prepare for the NFL Combine and the Draft since he last donned a South Carolina uniform at the Capital One Bowl in January.

Clowney told the radio crowd he hopes to run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, which would be a record for a defensive end.

Clowney was also asked if he had any regrets for returning for his junior season, which was less productive than many football analysts expected.

"No, I do not," said Clowney. "Coming into the season, I had a lot of high expectations on myself, but things didn't go along with this plan. We finished at No. 4 in the country, so it was a good season."

The defensive end also said he's putting off any foot surgery necessary to fix bone spurs until after next season unless he's asked to by his future NFL team.

NFL Draft analysts have the bruising prospect going anywhere from the first pick to the third pick. ESPN's Mel Kiper has Clowney going third to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair definitely has his eye on Clowney and he's thinking of pairing him with fellow defensive end and Pro Bowler J.J. Watt.

"He's one of these players that is really a once-in-every-10-years kind of physical specimen that comes along," said McNair.

The 2014 NFL Draft begins Thursday, May 8.
