Lubbock-Cooper ISD considers $55 million bond package

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Big changes could be coming to Lubbock-Cooper ISD.

The Board of Trustees and the administration will introduce a $55 million bond package during Thursday's public forum.

Lubbock-Cooper ISD Superintendent Pat Henderson said the bond proposal is big and bold.

"We are proposing to build basically double the amount of classrooms that are in the existing high school, around 51 classrooms that will get us through at least the next ten years - but again we have two middle schools now feeding the high schools and that is where the crunch is coming," Henderson said.

He said their elementary schools are feeling the growing pains too, and the district hopes to add new wings to both Cooper North and Central Elementary schools.

And as for the 18 portable buildings at the high school? They would be replaced by a career and technology center.

"There will be expanded programs for our ag, building trades, family, consumer, science and cosmetology, which is part of the House Bill 5 push to have more vocational training for our students," Henderson said.

The design also comes with new locker rooms and expanded athletic facilities to accommodate the growing number of students.

Right now, Lubbock-Cooper ISD's tax rate is at $1.48 for every $100 evaluation.

If this bond passes, that would increase to $1.54.

"Our operational budget is around 30 million. Eighty percent of that budget is personnel. So, that only leaves you with about six million left for fuel and food and supplies and staff development and things like that so the only way to have these facilities is to have a bond issue."

The public forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lubbock-Cooper High School's Performing Arts Center.

If you can't make it to the forum, you can check the district's website at: http://www.lcisd.net/pages/LCISD.

Henderson said the district will send out an informational letter about the bond package to every homeowner in the district in March.
