As Lubbock inches closer to the early voting period for the primary election, local political groups are working to get their candidates in front of voters.

The Lubbock County Democratic Party hosted a meet-and-greet to give Lubbock residents a chance to speak with the candidates face to face - something organizers say seems to be taking a back seat with the progression of social media.

Matt Kennedy, campaign manager for Neal Marchbank, said opportunities like this give political candidates a chance to interact with voters.

"I think it's incredibly beneficial because it allows the people to come out and meet the candidates directly," Kennedy said. "So much of campaigning has turned to online, social media, phone banking, but the chance to come out and meet directly with the candidates and ask them questions directly one-on-one really has an impact."

Kenny Ketner, chair of the Lubbock County Democratic Party, said he wanted Lubbock Democrats to meet their current candidates.

"We feel like people have become disconnected from the electoral process," Ketner said, "so what we want to do is reach out to people who have a good voting record and have voted Democratic in the past and say, 'Hey, these are our candidates this year. We want you to get to meet them, understand their issues and turn out to vote on election day.'"

Early voting begins Tuesday, February 18th, and election day is Tuesday, March 4th.

The Lubbock County Democratic Party will have an event on mMonday at 7 p.m. at the Vintage Township Town Hall.

The group is hosting a congressional debate for its candidates for the United States House of Representatives.
