Two American security officers were found dead on a ship off the coast of Africa Tuesday, including a former Navy SEAL from metro Baton Rouge.

A spokesman for the owner of the ship said late Thursday that police reported "the presence of drugs and paraphernalia in the room" where the two security contractors were found dead.

Police said Mark Daniel Kennedy, 43, of Baton Rouge, and Jeffrey Reynolds, 44, were found dead in a cabin on the Norfolk-based Maersk Alabama.

The Navy says Kennedy enlisted in 1995 and completed his final tour of duty in 2008.

The ship was berthed in Port Victoria in the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles. Its 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates was dramatized in the movie "Captain Phillips."

Maersk Line released the following statement Thursday morning:

Maersk Alabama was cleared to leave the Seychelles when the authorities completed their onboard investigation. She is now underway. We do not have any other information about the investigation, including the autopsy report.

The men worked for Virginia-based Trident Security, founded by former SEALs.

Tom Rothrauff, the president of Trident Group Inc. released the following statement:

"It is with great sorrow that Trident Group confirms the death of two Security contractors while onboard a merchant vessel which was pier side in the Seychelles. At the request of the families, the names are not being released.

Seychelles authorities are conducting a full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident.  The next of kin have asked that no further information be released and requested that all respect the privacy of the families."
