Lubbock father surprises daughter with long-distance Valentine's Day gift

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A Lubbock dad made a Valentine's Day wish come true for his daughter who lives 2,035 miles away.

8-year-old Bella Salas says that all she wanted was to go to the father-daughter dance at her church with her daddy.

But there was one minor problem, Bella lives in Boston with her mom and her dad lives in Lubbock.

So, Rick Salas delivered a gift that Bella will never forget.

"I thought, why don't we get to her grandpa's house and I'll hide in a box, put a note on it saying that I couldn't be there but hopefully she will like her gift," said Rick.

Bella read the letter aloud and ripped apart the box to find the perfect present.

"I thought it was a puppy or a clown that was going to jump out of the box," said Bella.

"We couldn't stop crying, I think we did that for maybe 10 minutes before she could compose herself," said Rick.

But this surprise gift wasn't easy to deliver.

A major snowstorm threatened to delay and cancel Rick's flights, making for a very stressful 8 hour trip, but he said that bad weather or long distance could stop him.

Rick arrived just in time to be Bella's date to the dance.

"Her reaction was well worth it," said Rick, "I will never forget it and I know that she will never forget it either."
