LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

34-year-old Ashlee Dean of Post, TX has been charged with capital murder following the shooting death of her daughter Alex on Thursday.

The formal charge is "Capital murder of a person under six years of age."

The family says Alex was just short of her second birthday.

Garza County authorities were called to the home on Thursday afternoon.

The girl's father lives and works in Post and she died inside his home.

Child Protective Services released a statement on Friday afternoon, confirming that the family did have a history with CPS.

They say they opened an investigation for neglect in Feburary 2013 and "found reason to believe the allegations were true."

CPS says, "At that time, there were concerns about substance abuse and poor living conditions in the home. We successfully worked services with the mother during the next six months and closed the case in November 2013."

A fund has been established to help with Alex's funeral expenses at Wells Fargo bank in Post.

The exact circumstances of the child's death have not been confirmed by law enforcement as of Friday afternoon, but we will continue to update this story as we learn more.
