I was intrigued this week to learn county commissioners are in early discussions with a company to consider putting cameras in Lubbock County school zones to stop speeders.
Unlike the City of Lubbock red light camera debacle five years ago, this proposal appears to be less intrusive and restricted to areas where we know kids are crossing the street every weekday.
First, a program like this stands to net our county government lots of money. That should not be the focus or priority. The priority is the safety of children.
And there are still lots of questions to be answered before the public can weigh in on supporting or opposing this idea.
I, for one, look forward to hearing more about this issue in the coming weeks. Stay tuned…
