This week the Lubbock Power and Light citizen board of directors made an important vote.
They decided to throw out all previous proposals to address Lubbock's energy needs come 2019. That's when our contract to buy power from Xcel expires.
This vote comes after a major controversy over the proposal process, including allegations of favoritism and bid rigging.
There was also some question about the qualifications of the company that originally won the bid. An investigation by an outside law firm ultimately found no evidence of wrongdoing.
Wrongdoing or not, bid rigging or not, starting over was the best option. As the board pointed out, any new proposals will include updated numbers to better plan for the future.
A fresh start will also help ease the appearance of impropriety and hopefully restore some confidence in LP&L's leadership from the group that owns it - the taxpayers.
