Red Raiders kick off Spring Football Practice

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Kliff Kingsbury began his second year of Spring Practice as Head Coach of the Texas Tech football program on Wednesday.

The Red Raiders are coming off an 8-5 season under the then first year Head Coach. Tech began the 2013 season winning seven consecutive games before losing five straight to end the regular season.

Much of the late-season frustration was quelled when the Red Raiders defeated No. 14 Arizona State 37-23 in the Bridgeport Education Holiday Bowl to end the year.

The offseason for the Red Raiders has been as up and down as the 2013 season was.

Two quarterbacks who saw playing time last season have left the program and joined other universities, but the Red Raiders had a successful recruiting class, bringing in 23 new faces, including Patrick Mahomes, a solid quarterback prospect out of Whitehouse, Texas.

After all the shakeup, Kingsbury and his crew are ready to get back to the X's and O's. Following practice, he addressed what the team must work on this spring.

"A lot. Just having the same defensive coordinator, same defensive coaches for two years in a row, it's going to be fun to watch those guys develop and grow," Kingsbury said.

"Offensively, traditionally year two of our offense is when it has really jumped. With the quarterback returning, a lot of starters on that offensive line, and a lot of play makers on that offense, we expect them to continue to get better this spring."

Due to the changes in the offseason, Starting Quarterback Davis Webb is the only QB listed on the spring roster with any game experience. With the lack of depth, Webb plans to take advantage of the extra repetitions this spring.

"I've got to get better each and every day because I have a long way to go," Webb said. "I might not have guys breathing down my neck competing for the job but I'm treating it like that. I think you can ask anybody today, I was getting mad at myself after a couple (poor) throws. Coach Kingsbury is really hard on me, which is great because he wants me to go be good. That's always fun, to play for a guy who really wants you to be good."

Spring practice began Wednesday and will last through the Spring Game on April 12th.

Practice will be open to the public Saturday March 29th at 11 a.m. at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland, Texas, on Friday April 4th in Jones AT&T Stadium (Time TBA) and finally Saturday April 12th for the Spring Game at 11 a.m. in Jones AT&T Stadium.
