Rebel rally falls short in title game

MACON, GA (WALB) -

Turner County had a chance to tie the game and the ball with five seconds to play, but couldn't get off a shot as Wilkinson County defended their GHSA A-Public state championship, 72-64.

On the final play, the Rebels inbounded the ball from halfcourt to senior guard Nate Martin. Martin was swarmed immediately, and the ball was tapped away.

Martin tried to push the ball to a teammate, but it rolled out of bounds, taking any hope to complete the comeback with it.

"It was a hard fought game," Turner County head coach Tyrone Kellogg says. "We missed some free throws during the game that kind of put us in a hole."

Both teams struggled late from the charity stripe, but the Rebels' woes from the line lasted four quarters. Turner County made only 16 of 39 free throws, a miserable 41 percent.

Kellogg was proud of how his team fought until the end though.

The Rebels trailed by 16 at half, and by eight with two minutes to play.

"We fought, and we continued to fight," he says. "For our young kids, keep your heads up and let's try to get back to this thing next year."

The Rebels finish the season 26-5.
