COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The University of South Carolina student paralyzed by a stray bullet shooting in Five Points in late 2013 was honored by the Gamecocks baseball team during Tuesday night's game against Furman.

Childress was on hand to throw out the first pitch and receive a baseball jersey with her name embroidered on the back.

Gamecocks head coach Chad Holbrook met Childress at midfield to present her with the jersey.

"Around this baseball program, we like to talk about 'battle' and 'win anyway', well Martha and showed us truly how to battle and win anyway," said Holbrook.

Holbrook also gave a check for $1,000 for a fund Childress started after she was paralyzed.

Childress remains in recovery just months after the incident that left her paralyzed. She was discharged from a rehabilitation center in Atlanta and taken back to her home in the Upstate.

Meanwhile, the man accused in the shooting, 21-year-old Michael Juan Smith, recently pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge, but has not admitted firing the weapon or shooting Childress.

As for the Gamecocks baseball team, they easily dispatched Furman in a final score of 5-0.
