Suspect from police chase charged with aggravated assault on peace officer

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A suspect taken into custody following a short police chase on Wednesday is now facing a variety of charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Police tell us it started when officers responded to a theft in progress at the Target on Marsha Sharp Freeway on Wednesday afternoon. Officers were told the suspect was possibly armed with a knife.

Police have identified the suspect as 27-year-old Enrique Garcia, Jr. They say he nearly hit the responding officer with his car when he drove out of the Target parking lot.

Early reports indicate they began chasing him near Milwaukee when he got out of the car and started running.

Officers set up a perimeter and were able to catch the suspect at 37th and Ironton around 6 p.m.

Other charges include evading with a vehicle, theft with two or more convictions, and two LSO warrants.
