Performing arts project gets boost from Sybil B. Harrington endowment

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The future of a new performing arts facility in Lubbock just got brighter thanks to the Lubbock Area Foundation.

Seventeen local organizations each got a portion of the $217,661 from the Sybil B. Harrington endowment.

The Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association, LEPPA, is still millions of dollars away from the final product, but board members say this donation will go a long way.

LEPPA received the largest cut of the endowment with $100,000 to be given over a ten-year period.

Board member Patty A'Alise says this donation will put them closer to their dream of a new performing arts center.

"We have a lot to offer this community and most of all, the people," D'Alise said.

The facility will cost around $90 million.

Plans are set for the new facility to take over a familiar building, the former Department of Public Safety building.

Sheryl Cates with the Lubbock Area Foundation discussed the mission of the new facility.

"The mission is to provide arts and culture and entertainment, to inspire and educate our local community," Cates said.

"I love this community, I love Lubbock and I want to make sure arts and culture community continues to go into future generations and make a difference in the lives of people who live in the communities across our 15-county area."

Other organizations that received money from the endowment include:

  • Ballet Folklorico Aztlan de Lubbock
  • Ballet Lubbock
  • Charles Adams Studio Project
  • Each One Reach One
  • Flatlands Dance Theatre
  • Hub Theatre Group
  • Louise Hopkins Underwood Center or the Arts
